How to report a Steam scammer (and protect yourself after)

If someone scammed you or your community, reporting it properly is more effective than calling them out publicly — and it protects you from getting it wrong. Here is the right order.

Four steps: gather evidence, report on Steam, report in your community, and secure your account.Reporting a Steam scammer — 4 steps1Gather evidencechat · trade · ID2Report on Steamprofile → Report3In your communityReport Assistant4Secure accountAPI key · password
Keep the report factual and secure your account after any suspicious contact.

1. Gather evidence first

  • Screenshot the chat, the trade offer or history, and any off-platform messages.
  • Note the scammer’s SteamID or profile URL. Resolve it with the SteamID Converter so it stays stable even if they rename.
  • Record timestamps and what was promised versus delivered.

2. Report on Steam

  • On the scammer’s profile, use the “⋮ → Report” option and pick the closest category, such as scamming or fraud.
  • For lost items or account issues, open a Steam Support ticket with your evidence. Steam handles enforcement; it generally does not restore traded items, so set expectations.

3. Report in your community or Discord

If it happened in a server, file it through the SteamTexx Report Assistant so moderators have structured evidence tied to the real account — not a screenshot war. Keep the language factual, such as “unconfirmed report” or “evidence attached”, never a public cheater or scammer verdict.

4. Protect yourself afterward

  • Revoke your Steam Web API key if you logged in anywhere suspicious or shared it.
  • Change your password and ensure Steam Guard mobile authenticator is on.
  • Deauthorize other devices from Steam account settings.

Stay fair and accurate

Report facts, not accusations. Labeling someone a cheater or scammer publicly without proof can be defamatory and can rebound on you — let the evidence and the platforms do the judging.

Frequently asked questions

How do I report a scammer on Steam?

Open the scammer’s profile, use the Report menu and choose the scamming/fraud category. For lost items, also file a Steam Support ticket with your chat and trade-history screenshots.

Will Steam refund items lost to a scam?

Usually not. Steam generally does not reverse completed trades or restore traded items, so reporting is about enforcement against the account, not recovery.

What evidence do I need to report a Steam scam?

Screenshots of the chat and trade offer or history, the scammer’s SteamID or profile URL, and timestamps showing what was promised versus delivered.

How do I report a scammer in my Discord community?

Use the SteamTexx Report Assistant so the report is structured and tied to the real Steam account. Keep wording factual and avoid public accusations without evidence.

What should I do after being scammed on Steam?

Revoke your Steam Web API key, change your password, confirm Steam Guard is enabled, and deauthorize unknown devices, especially if you logged in on any off-platform trade site.
