Steam bans explained: VAC, game, trade & community bans

A red “ban” line on a Steam profile looks alarming — but Steam shows several different ban types, and each means something different. Reading them correctly is the difference between a fair assessment and a false accusation.

What Steam shows — and what it hides

  • Shown: number of VAC bans, number of game bans, days since the last ban, and trade-ban status.
  • Hidden: which game or match, the exact reason, or the specific cheat. Do not fill that gap with assumptions — banned is not the same as banned for X.

VAC ban vs game ban

A VAC ban is Valve’s automated anti-cheat catching cheat software in a VAC-secured game; it is account-wide and permanent. A game ban is issued by the developer through their own system and only applies to that game. Both show on the profile, but a game ban from one title says nothing about another.

How bans affect trust

  • An active trade ban is the single strongest signal of trading risk.
  • An old VAC in a game you do not care about may be irrelevant to a trade today — recency and relevance matter.
  • Multiple bans across games or time form a stronger pattern than any single one.

How to check the bans on a profile

Open the profile and look for the ban line, or paste the SteamID or URL into SteamTexx profile search. SteamTexx surfaces ban type, count and recency together, so an old isolated ban is not confused with an active pattern. To prepare a proper report instead of a public accusation, use the Report Assistant.

Frequently asked questions

What does a VAC ban mean?

A VAC (Valve Anti-Cheat) ban means Steam’s automated system detected cheat software in a VAC-secured game on that account. It is permanent and account-wide, and its play effect applies to the VAC-secured games involved.

What is the difference between a VAC ban and a game ban?

A VAC ban is issued automatically by Valve Anti-Cheat. A game ban is issued by the individual game’s developer through their own anti-cheat or moderation and only applies to that game.

Does a VAC ban remove my Steam inventory?

No. A VAC ban bars you from VAC-secured servers but does not delete your items. Items remain in the inventory and stay tradable unless a separate trade ban applies.

How can I see if someone has a VAC ban?

The ban status is shown on the public profile and stays visible even when other sections are private. SteamTexx surfaces VAC, game, trade and community bans together with how recent they are.

What is a Steam trade ban?

A trade ban or trade probation restricts a user’s trading and Market access, usually after scam reports or suspicious activity. It is the most relevant ban type when judging whether to trade with someone.
