How the Steam Community Market works: fees, holds & cash-out limits
The Steam Community Market lets you buy and sell in-game items with other users, but its fees, holds and wallet-only payout catch people out. Here is the practical version.
How buying and selling works
You list an item at a price. The buyer pays that price, and you receive that price minus fees as Steam Wallet funds. Buying is instant from the cheapest listing; selling can take time until someone buys at your price.
The fees: what you actually get
Steam takes a Steam transaction fee plus a game-specific fee, so roughly 15% comes off many item sales. Very cheap items can lose proportionally more because of minimum fees. Always read the “you receive” figure, not only the list price.
Wallet-only: you cannot withdraw cash
Market proceeds are Steam Wallet funds and cannot be converted back to real money through Steam. This is why third-party cash-out sites exist — and why they carry real scam and security risk. Selling on the official Market keeps you inside Steam’s protections.
Holds and cooldowns
- A Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is effectively required for smooth trading and selling.
- Without the authenticator, transactions can be held.
- Items bought on the Market typically have a 7-day trade cooldown.
- Limited accounts, trade bans, Steam Guard timing or regional restrictions can block selling or trading.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Steam Community Market work?
You list items for sale in Steam Wallet currency; buyers purchase instantly from the lowest listing, and the seller receives the price minus Steam’s fees as Wallet funds.
What fees does the Steam Market take?
A Steam transaction fee plus a game-specific fee can total roughly 15% for many items, with a small per-item minimum. The “you receive” amount already has fees deducted.
Can you withdraw money from your Steam Wallet?
No. Steam Wallet funds cannot be converted back to real money through Steam. Third-party cash-out sites do this unofficially and carry significant risk.
Why can’t I sell or trade on the Steam Market?
Usually because of limited-account status, a trade ban, Steam Guard not active long enough, a region restriction or an item still in its trade cooldown.
How long is the Steam Market trade cooldown?
Items bought on the Market generally have a 7-day trade cooldown before they can be traded again.
